John's specialty is backcountry lightning risk management. He recently retired as the Curriculum & Research Manager at NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) www.nols.edu. He continues to work as a senior instructor on NOLS expeditions around the world, and to do risk management consulting of outdoor programs. He authored the NOLS Lightning book and has videos and published papers on lightning risk management for backcountry campers and hikers. John has been an educator since the age of 15 when he began his career as a camp counselor/high school science teacher/USMC Spec Ops chief instructor/NOLS instructor/professor. He has also served his community of Lander, WY as a Search & Rescue Commander and Deputy Coroner. He has a Ph.D. in education.
